Certification
Certifications

All BioComp® products comply with the European standard EN 13432 which is the current reference for biodegradable and compostable plastics coming from renewable and natural sources. To ensure compliance with European legislation, BioComp® is obtaining “OK Compost” certification by the Belgian AIB VINCOTTE. This brand, that is recognized both by the AFNOR and the NEC, ensures the verification of the absence of heavy metals and harmful substances (such as phthalates) in BioComp® bio-plastic formulations. Also biodegradability of at least 90% in a maximum of six months, the excellent disintegration of manufactured items and the eco-toxicity of the humus are ensured.
Therefore BioComp® could be considered an example for the obtained certifications and for the tests carried out with the most sophisticated analytical and scientific equipments.

Unique
FEATURES
BioComp® bio-plastic is a dream coming true.
A material at the service of sustainable development, capable of combining actual needs with those of agriculture and industry.
BioComp® is a real response to the demand for consumer products with low environmental impact representing an alternative to the recycling.
BioComp® bio-plastic wastes can be dumped in landfills due to their rapid biodegradability. The environmental impact of such a disposal is inferior to that generated by the incineration. In addition, the compression of this solid waste only requires 5-10 minutes per ton with minimum energy and zero emissions.
Besides, if BioComp® biopolymers will replace synthetic plastics, there will be a reduction of waste management costs, as well as, the reduction of waste containers and of logistics and storage costs.
Besides, if BioComp® biopolymers will replace synthetic plastics, there will be a reduction of waste management costs, as well as, the reduction of waste containers and of logistics and storage costs. We shouldn’t forget also that fertilizer obtained by composting BioComp® biopolymers is an excellent compost substance that can be sold as fertilizer, thus completing a virtuous circle in which raw materials are returned to Earth through natural processes of biodegradation and composting without releasing pollutants.
BioComp® can be used in industrial processes such as: Injection moulding, thermoforming, extrusion, blow molding and lamination.

Compostable
Compostable Polymers
What is Compostable Polymers?
The idea behind the creation of compostable polymers produced from renewable sources originates from Nature’s cycle: on Earth over 60 million tons of organic material are generated through photosynthesis, most of which are converted by microorganisms into raw materials, namely carbon dioxide and water, as shown in the chart above.
Polymers derived from renewable sources are divided into three main classes:
Polymers extracted from biomass such as polysaccharides (starch and cellulose) and proteins (casein and gluten)
Synthetically produced polymers from bio-derived monomers (polylactide or PLA)
Polymers obtained from micro-organisms (polyhydroxyalkanoates or PHAs)
From Nature To BioComp®

BioComp® is an innovative family of bio-plastics produced using components of natural origin and biodegradable polymers obtained from both renewable raw materials and fossil fuels.
The use of plasticizers of vegetal origin and the addition of organic and inorganic charges (such as plant fiber, cellulose, lignin and talc) maintains its biodegradability and compostability.
BioComp® bio-plastics can be used from agriculture to industry, from long-lasting packaging and disposable packaging, from toys to various kinds and types of objects.
BioComp® comes in form of granules and can be processed according to the most common processing technologies in order to obtain fully biodegradable and compostable products, along with physical and mechanical properties comparable to those of traditional plastics. The possibility to obtain different degrees and/or formulations of its various components makes it extremely versatile for the most different customer requirements.

Biodegradability
The term biodegradation refers to the characteristic of certain substances to be assimilated by microorganisms and to be reintroduced in the natural cycle. The necessary condition for biodegradability is the existence in Nature of a microorganism (bacterium) capable of synthesizing the enzyme needed for the substance decomposition. Synthetic substances, artificially obtained through industrial processes (such as traditional plastics), accumulate in the environment increasing the pollution because there are no specific enzymes that break them down into simple absorbable substances, such as carbon dioxide, methane or water.

Compostability
The term compostable indicates the possibility of artificially controlling the parameters that influence the speed of biodegradability under controlled conditions and in specific structures. Therefore, compostable materials can biodegrade quickly, but not all biodegradable materials are also compostable. The composting time is influenced by the level of technology used, as well as by the size, the surface area and the morphology of the starting material and by temperature, pH and the microbial activity.

LIfe Cycle Assessment
The goal is to maintain an economic growth consistent with social and ecosystem equity, thus operating in a regime of environmental balance. Hence the need to manage resources with a commitment to reduce fuel consumption and pollution rates through, on one hand products re-use, recovery and recycle to obtain new raw material and, on the other hand, developing new resources and the use of non-polluting alternatives to oil.
All materials are now evaluated according to the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), a method that estimates energy and environmental loads associated with a product or process, based on the analysis of all the effects caused on the environment by the same product or process. The development of alternative energy sources or renewable resources is therefore a highly topical issue in light of the growing interest and development of a global economy that addresses the issues related to oil in terms of both energy efficiency and environmental impact.
In the last years the rising cost and limited availability of oil, the volume of packaging waste and the difficulties related to the disposal of plastic waste have been the driving forces for the identification of concrete solutions that can contribute to environmental sustainability. Among these, the use of biopolymers is one of the most innovative challenges.
